In the sun-drenched slopes where the Dolomites descend toward the Adige Valley, a tradition of winemaking stretches back over a century. Kellerei stands today as a testament to the vision of those who understood that the greatest wines are born from community.
The story begins in 1911, when the growers of Gries, a storied viticultural quarter on the western bank of the Talfer, established their cooperative cellar. Here, in soils rich with porphyry and alluvial deposits, Lagrein found its spiritual home — a grape of uncommon depth, cultivated for centuries in these precise terraces.
Two decades later, the winegrowers of St. Magdalena, tending their steep hillside vineyards above Bolzano, founded their own cooperative in 1932. Their Vernatsch-based wines — light, perfumed, impossibly fresh — had already earned a reputation that extended far beyond the borders of Südtirol.
In 1998, these two historic cellars united to form Kellerei, bringing together over 200 member growers, centuries of accumulated knowledge, and some of the most privileged vineyard sites in all of Alto Adige. The merger was not a beginning, but a culmination — a recognition that together, these families could craft wines that speak with the full voice of this extraordinary landscape.
The growers of Gries establish their cooperative cellar, dedicating themselves to the cultivation of Lagrein in the porphyry-rich soils west of the Talfer.
Winegrowers on the sun-blessed hillsides above Bolzano unite, crafting the delicate St. Magdalener that would become synonymous with Alto Adige.
The historic merger unites over 200 member growers and nearly a century of tradition under one roof, creating one of Alto Adige’s most distinctive estates.
Each bottle tells the story of its origins — of altitude and latitude, of sun-warmed stone and alpine air, of families who have tended these vines for generations.
Deep ruby, velvety tannins, notes of dark berries and chocolate. The flagship of Gries.
Bright garnet, fresh with red fruit and almond. A true expression of our terroir.
Aromatic and golden, with rose petal, lychee, and spice. Alto Adige’s signature white.
Crisp and mineral, with apple and pear notes. Alpine freshness in every sip.
Alto Adige occupies one of the most extraordinary viticultural positions in all of Europe. Sheltered by the towering Dolomites to the north and warmed by Mediterranean currents rising through the Adige Valley, this narrow corridor creates a microclimate of exceptional character.
Warm days ripen the fruit to full intensity. Cool alpine nights preserve the acidity and aromatic complexity that give our wines their signature freshness. Over 300 days of sunshine each year bathe the terraced hillsides in light, while mineral-rich soils of porphyry, limestone, and glacial moraine lend structure and depth to every vintage.
From the gentle slopes of Gries to the steep terraces of St. Magdalena, our vineyards span elevations from 250 to over 600 metres above sea level — each site contributing its own voice to the choir of our wines.
For us, sustainability is not a marketing term — it is the logical expression of a cooperative founded on the principle that the land we farm must be passed on in better condition than we found it.
Our 200+ member growers practice sustainable viticulture guided by integrated pest management, organic soil enrichment, and biodiversity preservation. Cover crops blanket the vineyard floors; hedgerows and wildflower strips border our parcels, providing habitat for beneficial insects and pollinators.
In the cellar, we pursue energy efficiency through solar installations, gravity-flow winemaking, and heat-recovery systems. Water is recycled and reused. Packaging materials are sourced from certified sustainable suppliers.
The cooperative model itself is inherently sustainable: shared resources, shared knowledge, shared responsibility for this landscape we call home. Every decision is made not for quarterly returns, but for the next generation.
